The POWERplex campus is a planned mega sports complex in Hazelwood, Missouri developing out of the former St. Louis Mills Outlet Mall. POWERplex will host more than 180 major sports tournaments and special events per year. The public-private partnership will include six major sports venues, 13 restaurants, hotels, and more than a dozen sports-focused retail stores. Practice space for volleyball, softball, and baseball are available for rent now, and many of the full-scale venues will open in 2021.
The Special Events Manager will be fully responsible for the planning, management, execution, and follow-up of major events and special activities at the POWERplex (i.e. Drive-In St, Louis, corporate events, conferences, expos, etc.) This is a management and operations position overseeing a team of coordinators and frontline staff that manage parking, security, food and beverage, hospitality (ushers, ambassadors, ticket takers, etc.), housekeeping, and set-up/strike teams. Basically, this role is the day-to-day event operations lead who plans the logistics and makes sure that each coordinator is well trained and prepared to manage each aspect of a special event.
Duties Include but are not limited to:
Entertainment Management - Working to help secure appropriate and popular entertainment with various talent booking agencies to ensure all bands, acts, and performers are secured and contracts and riders are in place to meet the needs of each group (green room, F & B, Hotels, etc.)
Staffing – Work closely with POWERplex HR/Staffing Director and Director of Finance to develop a staffing plan for each type of event. This will include developing job descriptions for each role needed, recruiting from various on-line staffing services, colleges, and high schools to attract quality staff, develop and run training sessions for each type of worker. Try to cross-train as many staff members as possible in various roles. Be certain that the required paperwork is completed and files kept on each employee hired. Also, help build strong internship programs with area colleges to provide quality support to the events team and manage their academic assessments and college credit evaluations.
Logistics – Work with Drive-In Team (Sponsorships, F&B liaison, CFO, CEO, Director of Operations, etc.) to ensure nightly set up, materials and operational event needs are communicated and completed for any and all special events (i.e. trash bags, sound system operating, pipe and drape, portable tents, tables and chairs, etc.)
Sponsorship – Work with the Director of Sponsorship to ensure all on-promise assets for sponsors are placed correctly on the property. Be sure that VIPs and Sponsors attending the event are given special attention by your team. Be aware of any and all special sponsor amenities or services.
Food Trucks – Recruit and hire a Food Truck liaison who nightly will work to ensure food trucks arrive and also works to ensure that food trucks turn in sales following event dates. You will not be responsible for booking the trucks just ensuring they show up and report sales.
Security – In collaboration with local police officials and Director of Operations and Director of Facilities, help develop a strong security plan for all events. Make safety and security part of EVERY STAFF person’s training of what to do and how to handle any threat or breach.
Marketing – Assist the POWERplex Marketing and Communication Team, our media partners, and third-party resources that position Drive-In as the destination for summer. Help give ideas, photos, and video clips from your special events that can help enhance the marketing and branding of the POWERplex and future events. Be the eyes and ears for the marketing team and assist as needed on social media posts and help with content creation for website, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Tiktok, etc.
Non-Profit/Corporate Events – Work with talent agencies, non-profits, corporations, and current clients/partners to host their events at the POWERplex many venues. Create tailor-made and custom party and corporate meeting ideas that can be sold and marketed to the community.

Lead by example. Know and be willing to assist on every job you oversee. Step in with your team when appropriate and assist with setup and breakdown duties, housekeeping duties, empower your security team to be diligent and everyone takes pride in their jobs.
Build, train and empower a great events team that is prepared to take on any type of event.
Qualifications
Experience managing teams of people and the ability to delegate once you have trained your team.
Must be available to work year-round weekends as necessary (most big events are on weekends and that includes major holidays).
Detail-oriented and able to juggle many different tasks and assignments at once.
Ability to work independently while also understanding the importance of teamwork and functioning well in a multi-talented group of professionals.
Ability to lift at least 40 pounds and to work on your feet for extended periods of time.
Ability to recognize and respond professionally to emergency situations and troubleshoot unexpected issues.
Excellent communications and interpersonal skills. Being pro-active and assertive with your team will be key to your success. They can’t perform what hasn’t been clearly communicated.
Types of Special Events You Will Lead:
Drive-In St. Louis - This is the second season for Drive-In St. Louis. In 2020, we attracted nearly 60,000 visitors to the campus at 23 events over 9 weeks. The biggest draw was drive-in concerts followed by movies. The venue also hosted more than a dozen graduations and several private, corporate events during the run between May and July.
In 2021, we will be extended, expanding, and improving the Drive-In St. Louis experience, adding more features and amenities, including food trucks, a hospitality tent, a family fun zone (inflatable obstacle course), Doggie Drive-Ins, corporate rentals of the entire venue and much more! The series will run from May 5 – through October 31, 2021. The Special Events Manager will oversee the operations of the 60+ events (many events will have the same staff, same logistics, same operational protocols, with different bands and movies).
Hall of Game - A new indoor venue that includes 10 Corn Hole lanes, 5 pickleball courts, 10-15 dart lanes, and a variety of arcade and other specialty games. These venues will be able to host corporate and private events (school lock-ins, team building events, etc.) and Manager of Special Events may be needed to assist the Hall of Game staff on booking musical groups, setting up sound systems or other special event needs.
Holiday Parties - As various new venues open at the POWERplex, the Events team may be called upon to host special “themed” weekend parties for Halloween, Christmas, New Years Celebrations, St. Patrick’s Day parties, 4th of July Celebrations, etc. This will be creating a festive and fun entertainment venue (including concerts and music festivals) that will drive people to our food court, stadium, dome, beach volleyball venue, theatres or the 170,000sf arena for fun and engaging parties that fit the season.
Special Corporate Meetings, Expos, and Conventions - Work with trade show planners, expo and exhibitor companies, corporate planning groups, to select and choose POWERplex for events ranging from 100 to 5,000 people. We have a wide range of different sizes and styles of venues with full food service capability (with 13 different types of restaurants on property). Your events team and staff needs to have the depth, experience, and nimbleness to be able to handle small to large events.
Cooperation with Sports Events - While the role is not responsible for any of the marketing, planning, execution, logistics, or staffing for the many youth and amateur sports events that will be held throughout the year. Some larger, national tournaments will create the opportunity and built-in audience for the events team to create some fun, interactive events for the thousands of sports visitors to enjoy (evening concerts, challenge games, special promotions to attend a special activity or festival going on simultaneously. This will require coordination with the sports operations and sports sales/marketing team.
This management position will report to the Director of Sports Operations, who reports to the COO/CFO. All staffing planning and budgets will be approved through this reporting structure. The manager will have significant latitude and freedom to build their own team of event coordinators (4 to 6 positions depending on the events) who will each oversee teams from 3 to 10 people). At any given time, 15 to 40 people will directly report up through this Manager of Special Events (depending on the season and types of events being held at the POWERplex).
